Evaluation of General Sources

Evaluation of General Sources

This blog post contains 2 sources relevant to my career's controversies. I will analyze these general sources by answering the guidelines on the "Tips & Strategies" in our writers guide. Both of these articles discuss Michelle Obama's plan to change the healthy lunch meal plan of children to a less strict plan due to the amount of food waste.

Author

The author is Merrill Hope. She has created several articles for Breitbart News. Her Linkedin indicates that she recedes from the Dallas/Fort Worth Area. She currently works in writing and editing for Breitbart News. Previously, she worked for Media and Public Relations, Urban Legand PR, and the Woodland Hills Chamber of Commerce. She received her college education at the University of California in Los Angeles, California. Lastly, she is linked to a blog site called Strategic Partner Urban Legend PR which appears to be about public relations, marketing, and branding.

Last Updated

Hope last updated her article on July 8, 2014.

It is not out of date because Michelle Obama did try to change school lunch qualifications. From my understanding, it is true.

The links link to the National School Lunch Program, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Michelle Malkin blogged, and how many other sources reported the event's reactions. Fortunately, these links still work

Purpose

The purpose of the text is trying to inform the reader about Michelle Obama's plan to reduce food waste of the set healthier lunch standards for students. It also informs the reader that the federal government forces the schools to implement meal plans on students in order for the schools to make money. However, Michelle Obama wants to implement healthier requirements that do not force the students to take food that they do not necessarily want.

The article is promoting the idea that students throw away over $100,000 worth of food each year, and that this money can be spent elsewhere to improve the schools' lunch systems. This money thrown away is hurting the schools, and families are losing their money. Therefore, this article is supposed to stir up some angst against the current system and to influence people to approve Michelle Obama's new lunch meal plan. However, it illustrates Americans' unwillingness to change to healthier food options as well because many students refuse to eat the healthier food options given to them, so they are blaming Obama for creating the strict standards that were enforced prior.

Graphics

The only graphic is a picture of Michelle Obama's face full of compassion and empathy at the topic of the page. This picture is supposed to evoke emotions in the reader because it is showing that Michelle Obama feels so passionate about this cause; the picture is supposed to make the people feel as if her plan should be followed through with.

Position on Subject

The author's position on the subject is unclear at first. She first gives information on both sides of the argument, and ends the article by talking about healthier foods and americans' unwillingness to accept it. It seems as if the subject of the article changed from being about school waste to students eating healthier foods. Eventually, it becomes more clear that the author wants Michelle Obama's new plan to be enforced because it allows the students to select the healthier foods that they would like to have for lunch instead of the school's forcing them to eat these foods and them ending up as waste.

Author

According to her twitter account, Kristen Fischer is a copywriter, journalist, resume writer, author of When Talent Isn't Enough: Business Basics for the Creatively Inclined, and a Patriots fan. I can verify her qualifications because her website gives sources and states the books she's written. She also has a tab on her website that discusses clients and their testimonials. Therefore, there is proof that she has worked for people under her qualifications.

The article was last updated on November 26, 2014.

The material is out of date because schools do not enforce as strict of lunch meals on students. Therefore, Obama's proposed new plan had been enforced.

The links on the page refer to USDA guidelines, years, studies, and healthy lunch tips for kids.
These links lead us to the United States Department of Agriculture, GAO highlights on research done in a pdf document, and other news websites to refer to for the studies done. Fortunately, these links still work.

Purpose

The text is trying to inform the reader that that the health guidelines for healthier lunches at schools has resulted in more waste because students do not find them appetizing. It is trying to promote a way for everyone to see that kids do not find healthy food appetizing. The government strives to make these foods more appetizing to students and to ease up on their strict laws on these meals.

Graphics

There are three graphics for this article. The first graphic is a young girl looking at her lunch tray with a face of disgust. This graphic is used in order to illustrate the disgust that children have with the healthy food served at lunch. The second graphic is a very young looking boy that looks overwhelmed with the large amount of food on his lunch tray. This graphic is used because many students are given more food than they can eat. The third graphic appears to be fruit and vegetable waste. This graphic is used because a lot of food is going to waste due to the children not being able to eat the amount given to them or their displeasure in the healthy food.

Position on Subject

The source seems to support the idea of children being involved in the healthy food selection process. The author claims that children are more inclined to eat healthy food if they are part of the process of selecting their healthy food options. Also, she tends to favor the change in a less strict lunch plan for the students because she only highlight the downsides of Obama's lunch meal plan; she emphasizes the changes that could be made to better the system.

Links

The source suggests avenues for further inquiry with readings, research, and links that involve the new healthy lunch plan and new ideas for healthy lunch meals for children. Also, it cite reputable sources, such as, Susan Gross with a Ph.D from Hopkins University and she gives a lot of knowledgable insight on the topic.
