My Thoughts on Comments

My Thoughts on Comments

Zeratsky, Katherine. "Cholesterol — the controversy continues." 2/20/15 via Mayo Clinic. Noncommercial Personal Use Only License.

Credible

1. Does this commenter seem to be expressing fear/anxiety about something or does s/he seem to be expressing a fantasy/wish about something? How can you tell?

This commenter does not express any fear. He expresses the general fears of the public regarding high cholesterol and heart disease. However, his fantasy is that the "new cholesterol" will be sugar. I can tell because he actually says that he thinks this will happen according how much sugar our society consumes.

2. What kinds beliefs and values do you think this commenter holds? What are you basing this on?

I believe that the commenter believes that society's unhealthy habits will mark the future on health scares. He is not necessarily basing this off of scientific information. However, he is basing it on the fact that many societies consume large amounts of sugar, so they will eventually realize that sugar is the cause of all problems.

3a. Why does this commenter came across as reasonable to you? Try and be specific and detailed here.

He seems reasonable to me because he actually is stating that endocrinologists have said that sugar can ruin tissue. This is reasonable because he is stating information told by someone that specializes in this area. However, he did not state a specific source which makes his resources questionable. Ultimately, he provides enough information on the topic of cholesterol that he deems himself more worthy that a lot of the commenters to be considered as credible.

1. Does this commenter seem to be expressing fear/anxiety about something or does s/he seem to be expressing a fantasy/wish about something? How can you tell?

I would not say that he is expressing any fears/anxiety or fantasy/wish. He merely is informing the public about medication prescribed that is supposed to make cholesterol capable.

2. What kinds beliefs and values do you think this commenter holds? What are you basing this on?

This commenter has a PhD, so I assume that he believes strongly that patients are able to cope with cholesterol is they are not prescribed medication. Also, he states that the medications are not all to blame for pain, but also lack of enzymes cause pain with cholesterol medications. He is firm to state the facts that he knows, so I assume that he is very knowledgeable in the topic.

3a. Why does this commenter came across as reasonable to you? Try and be specific and detailed here.

This commenter came across as reasonable to me because he has a Phd. I am assuming that it has to do with knowledge involving science due to his detailed comment. For example. he states specific enzymes and substances in the body that I have never heard of. Someone with prior medical knowledge is likely to know these terms. Also, he did not vent any of his opinions; he only stated facts.

Lacking Credibility

1. Does this commenter seem to be expressing fear/anxiety about something or does s/he seem to be expressing a fantasy/wish about something? How can you tell?

Jessica does not seem to be expressing much. She is summarizing in a satirical manner the effects of cholesterol. I want to say that she is expressing more of a fear than anything else; she is saying that if you are not health conscience, you will end up in a hospital. A hospital is not a very pleasant or desired place to go to because many people that go in never come out.

2. What kinds beliefs and values do you think this commenter holds? What are you basing this on?

I believe that the commenter feels that it is important to be healthy. I am basing it on the fact that she states that we need to watch our weight, watch sugar intake, or else we will end up in a hospital. It is important to do as much as we can to not end up in the hospital according to her.

3b. Why does this commenter come across as lacking credibility or trustworthiness for you? Try and be specific and detailed here.

They lack credibility because her comment is a huge fragment. She literally just says "cholesterol" and then starts saying what you should not do. She does not give a reason why we need to watch our health. She only throws it out there. It seemed as if she just wanted to reiterate or emphasize what other people had said previous.

1. Does this commenter seem to be expressing fear/anxiety about something or does s/he seem to be expressing a fantasy/wish about something? How can you tell?

I would not say they are too fearful. If anything, they are more thankful to be alive because they did not suffer a stroke. However, she said "I don't know what is next". It could be interpreted that it is a fear or minor anxiety because the future is unknown to her.

2. What kinds beliefs and values do you think this commenter holds? What are you basing this on?

I believe that this commenter thinks that heart problems are based on multiple factors. Therefore, heart issues are not solely based on cholesterol. For example, she mentions the "LDL/HDL etc.". I assume that she is meaning that there are more things acceptable that that impact heart issues with her statement.

3b. Why does this commenter come across as lacking credibility or trustworthiness for you? Try and be specific and detailed here.

She comes across as lacking credibility by her opening statement "LOL". LOL is very informal, and it appears that she is laughing at nothing or maybe at a previous person's ignorant comment. I am unsure on what she is laughing at. Also, questions saturated fats, trans fats, and genetic predisposition with MANY question marks. It is way over exaggerated. Besides her previous experience with having bad cholesterol, she comes across as not very knowledgeable on the topic.

Reflection

Carrie Bell Kent's blog post reminded me that people's comments can be mostly invalid opinions. The racist comments that the first source stated were not right. The other credible commentaries merely had said that the black man was not in the story, but they just remained confused about the movie's decision. However, the first commenter made racist and prejudice comments. In their defense, they could have just been a very upset comic fanatic, but they did not express it properly. Her blog was very well-written in the sense that it was simplistic, but it would have been easier to read if she was more specific in her examples. I value your opinions on the racist comments because it made me upset that someone would voice such a thing to the public. It shocks me that people are still so racist in this day in time.

Betsy Volk's blog post reminded me that some people comment just for the sake of commenting. The not credible sources were miraculously not credible. They stated obvious claims about the correct color of the dress, and used profanity. Capitalizing cuss words is not professional. However, her credible sources seemed very credible for the topic. For example, one source gave statistics and seemed rational in how they were contemplating the actual dress color. I valued her opinion on the first credible source the most because the person gave multiple perspectives on how the dress's color could be seen in different fields.

Calendar Reflection

Calendar Reflections

Most college students go out and party often. However, I feel as though partying takes away from the college experience.

Due to the fact that I am unlike many college students, I feel as if I have very good time management.

My schedule has a basic routine for Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and Tuesday and Thursday because the classes are the same for those days.

On days where my roommate and myself have extended schedules, we take rest days from the gym in order to save the remainder of our energy on doing homework.

During the weekdays, I plan on getting 6-7 hours of sleep, but a few extra hours on the weekends.

I am able to dedicate a significant amount of time studying and on doing homework because I get easily distracted. From past experience, I know I need a lot of time to do homework and study in order to succeed, which is why I am trying to dedicated many hours a day to doing homework.

Also, I am part of a long distance relationship. I have to be flexible with my homework and relaxation times in order to schedule FaceTimes and phone calls with my boyfriend. I will never jeopardize my homework time unless I know that I am able to complete it for the night.

I will be able to accomplish doing a minimum of 6 hours of homework and studying for English every week.

Reflection

Jovanka Potkonjak's calendar reflection made me feel at ease because I could relate to her busy schedule. She hopes that her busy schedule will help her stay focused and not get distracted by the typical college activities. I also am hoping that my schedule will assist me from getting too distracted. Also, I workout in order to relax. Working out and studying are great ways to keep your mind and body on track for optimal performance in academics.

Austin See's schedule is completely different from mine. He works and is part of a fraternity. However, his schedule has encouraged me to add more activities to mine! Even though a lot of my free time is going to be dedicated to FaceTiming my boyfriend back home, I feel like I still could add some activities to fit my spare time. For example, I have joined the Blue Chip leadership program, but I was doubting it because I did not want to over schedule myself. I am still contemplating it, but Austin's schedule helped me see that one hour of my time once a week will not put a dent in my schedule that I have now.

My Controversy

My Controversy

What is the article about?

This article discusses the new finds against the belief that the consumption of cholesterol should be monitored.

The new finds suggest that cholesterol consumption is not a major area of concern because it was once assumed that high cholesterol was connected to heart disease.

Consumption of cholesterol is necessary for bodily functions, and our bodies produce it natural.

Researchers found that in people who consumed 80-100mg less cholesterol than the 1970's. It appears that the increase of heart disease among our population is not directly related to cholesterol intake. Therefore, it is important to balance the amount of cholesterol consumed with other essential nutrients,

Cholesterol no longer is to be the only area of concern for heart health.

Why does the article interest me?

This article interests me because I am an aspiring Dietitian, and I look forward to learning about more controversies that arise in my area of study. I am very passionate about nutrition, and I wanted to learn more about the controversies of cholesterol. Considering my family has a past of bad cholesterol, I was hoping that this article could determine whether or not cholesterol has to do with their heart problems. In addition, my boyfriend has high cholesterol, and I have been concerned for his heart health due to his high cholesterol. Now, I am not as fearful about him having heart issues, but I will help him make healthier diet choices.

I found this article on Mayo Clinic's website under the category of Nutrition and Healthy Eating.

My Writing Process

My Writing Process

  1. What type(s) of writers do you consider yourself to be?
    • I consider myself to be a Sequential Composer because I tend to spend a lot of time on every aspect of writing. I tend to take a while to write because I revise paragraph after paragraph. This also exemplifies that I'm a sequential composer because they also revise profusely like I do.
  2. Does your writing process use several of the above approaches? If so, which ones?
    • I would say that my writing process utilizes the Heavy Planners because I plan a lot in advance prior to writing.
    • I also use the Heavy Reviser approach because I focus on editing my work for a substantial amount of time.
    • Due to these two approaches, I would have to conclude that I am mainly a Sequential Composer because they spend equal amounts of time planning as they do revising. This is similar to the method I use for writing. Also, they revise every paragraph little by little to make it perfect.

  3. Does your writing process seem to be successful? What are the strengths and weaknesses to your approach?
    • At times my writing process is successful, but sometimes it is not.
      • The strengths of my writing approach is that it seemingly makes sense because I spend a lot of time editing. Also, there is always clear topics sentences because they are very thought out.
      • The weaknesses of my writing are that it is very time consuming and stressful. By spending more time trying to nit pick every error, I make myself more stressed because I feel like it is not good enough.
  4. Do you think it might be beneficial for you to try a different approach? Why or why not?
    • Yes, it might be beneficial for me to try a new approach because I sometimes spend too much time on a single paragraph of a paper.

Reflection

Michaela Webb's blog post reminded me of myself in the sense that it is hard for me write without being passionate about the subject. This poses a major issue for writing because not every assignment can be base on my interests

I liked how she mentioned that changing her perspective on the topics of the assignments can assist her. It is a good idea because writing an essay in a positive mindset can help one write the essay more easily.

For me, my essays would lack depth if I could not fall in love with the assignment. However, I have learned that you are sometimes able to incorporate yourself into assignments without the general topic of the assignment being interesting. For example, if it is something about love, I will relate to me and my boyfriend.

Finding a thread of interest helps me stay engaged in my writing.

Lauren Wright-Land blog post reminded me of how I used to be. I used to procrastinate to do essays the night before they were due and be up until the next morning.

This is super unhealthy, and I was able to overcome my procrastination. I realize that I was only able to end my procrastination by keeping my schedule busy. By hanging out with my boyfriend at night and working out early in the morning, I was able to prioritize my essay. I learned to focus on the task at hand before the last minute.

Procrastination is very detiorating to me because I tend to get very anxious at the last minute. Not procrastinating is beneficial to me now and Lauren's post made me realize the big change I made last year.
